Overview
この度 The White では、ステファン・ケッペルと澤田育久によるコラボレーション展「Paper System」を開催いたします。 ステファン・ケッペルは、オランダ・アムステルダムを拠点に、建築を起点とした都市リサーチを展開してきました。素材や構造、さらに歴史や制度の表層を撮影し、それらのイメージを建築図面用ドラフトプリンタで重層的に印刷することで、都市に潜む多層性を可視化する作品を制作しています。 本展は、11月にThe Whiteで開催予定の展覧会に向けた滞在制作の一環として企画されたプレ展示です。来日したケッペルと、東京を拠点に活動する澤田が協働し、これまでともに制作してきた作品やテストピースをもとに構成します。 澤田がリサーチを通して撮影した東京の周縁部の写真と、ケッペルがアムステルダムで撮影した写真をオーバーラップさせた新作では、二人の異なる視点を通した都市の再解釈が試みられます。その結果、個別の都市を超えて、無名的で普遍的な都市構造が浮かび上がることを目指します。
The White is pleased to present “Paper System”, a collaborative exhibition by Stephan Keppel and Ikuhisa Sawada.
Based in Amsterdam, Keppel has been conducting urban research through the lens of architecture. By photographing materials, structures, and the visible layers of history and systems, and reprinting these images using an architectural draft printer, he produces multilayered works that visualize the hidden complexity of urban spaces.
This exhibition serves as a prelude to a larger show scheduled for November at The White and has been organized as part of Keppel’s residency in Tokyo. During his stay, Keppel collaborates with Tokyo-based photographer Sawada to present a selection of previously created works, experimental pieces, and test prints.
One of the new works overlays Sawada’s photographs of Tokyo’s peripheral areas with Keppel’s images taken in Amsterdam. Through the interplay of their perspectives, the artists reinterpret the city, aiming to reveal an anonymous yet universal structure underlying different urban environments.

ステファン・ケッペル（Stephan Keppel, 1973年生まれ）
オランダ・アムステルダム在住。アーティスト／ブックメイカー／プリントメイカー
ロイヤル・アカデミー・オブ・アート（ハーグ）でオートノマスアートを専攻（1994–1998）。都市を「グラフィックな現象」として捉え、写真、印刷、本、インスタレーションを横断した作品を制作する。廃棄された建築図面用コピー機（Océ 7055など）を用いた実験的な大判プリントを特徴とし、街歩きや自転車移動を通じて収集した都市の断片を重ね合わせ、建築や都市の痕跡を再構築してきた。
主な出版物に『Entre Entree』（2014／Fw:Books）、『Flat Finish』（2018／Fw:Books）、『Soft Copy Hard Copy』（2021／Fw:Books）がある。書籍を完成形ではなく次の制作につながる「出発点」と位置づけ、出版・展示・印刷実験を有機的に循環させることを重視している。
現在は、日本の印刷文化と都市歩行を組み合わせた新たなプロジェクトを進行中で、東京での展示とドキュメンテーションの出版を構想している。建築の小さな修繕跡や痕跡に着目し、都市の質感を捉える写真／印刷シリーズを展開する予定である。
主な展覧会に「HARD COPIES」（2021／Camera Austria Kunsthaus Graz、オーストリア）、“Unfolding Cities”（2021／AFF Galerie、ベルリン）、“Soft Copy Hard Copy”（2021／Enter Enter、アムステルダム）があり、作品はステデライク美術館、アムステルダム市立アーカイブ、カナディアン・センター・フォー・アーキテクチャー（CCA）、ICPニューヨークなどに収蔵されている。 Somfy International Photography Award（2021）最優秀賞受賞。モンドリアン財団（Mondriaan Fonds）から複数の助成を受けている。
Stephan Keppel (b. 1973)
Artist / Book-maker / Print-maker
Lives and works in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
Keppel studied Autonomous Art at the Royal Academy of Art (KABK), The Hague (1994–1998).
He treats the city as a “graphic phenomenon,” working across photography, print, books, and installation. His practice features experimental large-format output using discarded architectural blueprint copiers (including Océ 7055), layering urban fragments gathered through walking and cycling to reconstruct traces of architecture and the city.
Selected publications include Entre Entree (2014, Fw:Books), Flat Finish (2018, Fw:Books), and Soft Copy Hard Copy (2021, Fw:Books). He regards books not as endpoints but as starting points that circulate back into printing experiments and exhibitions.
He is currently developing a new body of work combining Japanese printing culture with urban walking, with plans for a publication documenting the Tokyo-based project. Focusing on subtle repairs and surface traces in the built environment, he explores the tactile presence of the city through photography and print.
Selected exhibitions include HARD COPIES (2021, Camera Austria Kunsthaus Graz), Unfolding Cities (2021, AFF Galerie, Berlin), and Soft Copy Hard Copy (2021, Enter Enter, Amsterdam). His works are held in the collections of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Amsterdam City Archives, Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA), and International Center of Photography (ICP), among others.

澤田育久（Ikuhisa Sawada）
1970年生まれ。東京在住。写真家／The White主宰。
金村修のワークショップに参加後、本格的に写真活動を開始。2014年よりオルタナティブスペース「The White」を主宰。カメラの記録性と機械的特性を活かし、日常では見過ごされがちな視点を提示することで、鑑賞者を新たな知覚体験へと誘う作品を制作している。
代表的なプロジェクト「closed circuit」（2011年～）では、駅などの公共空間で撮影した大判写真を層状に展示し、鑑賞者の動きに応じて関係性が変化する風景を生み出す。 主な展覧会に、αMプロジェクト「Mirror and Hole」（2017／東京）、“space/guide/volume”（2021／CAVE-AYUMIGALLERY／東京）、“Export / Import”（2021／The White／東京、アムステルダム、東京オランダ大使館）、“OTHERS”（2023／The White／東京、Fred & Ferry／アントワープ、Archipelago Books／上海）がある。
ニューヨーク、香港、バルセロナなど国内外のアートフェア、アートブックフェアにも多数参加。主な出版物に『closed circuit』（2017／The White）、『substance』（2018／RONDADE）、『OTHERS』（2024／Ori.studio、Marc Nagtzaamとの共著）がある。
Ikuhisa Sawada
Born 1970. Tokyo-based photographer; founder of The White.
After studying with photographer Osamu Kanemura, Sawada began working independently and has directed The White since 2014. His work explores mechanical vision and photographic recording, prompting new perceptual encounters by foregrounding perspectives often overlooked in daily life. In his ongoing project “closed circuit” (2011–), large images of public spaces such as train stations are layered in installation, producing shifting spatial relationships as viewers move.
Selected exhibitions include Mirror and Hole (αM Project, Tokyo, 2017), space/guide/volume (2021, CAVE-AYUMIGALLERY, Tokyo), Export / Import (2021, The White / Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Tokyo / Amsterdam), and OTHERS (2023, The White, Tokyo / Fred & Ferry, Antwerp / Archipelago Books, Shanghai).
